Energy Needs in the World Around Us

Help me give my students enhanced understanding of physics through project-based learning. The understanding of energy will not only help students understand the world around them but may also inspire a future career.

My Students

My students are older teens and adults who are seeking a CORE 40 diploma on limited resources such as homelessness or food insecurity. Many of my students are returning to high school after an extended time away or after a major life change. I have one student who is returning to school after having two children and needs her diploma in order to earn a better income. Many of my students benefit enormously from hands on learning experiences and from seeing the world of science "up close and personal."

Our school is a non-traditional high school in that we have an in building daycare as well as life coaches to help encourage students.

My Project

Hands on experiences and project-based learning enhance students' understanding of physics by allowing them to see physical laws in action. Calculations are important, but applying them is vital and allows a deeper understanding of the topic presented.

How many times have you ever said or thought "I am a hands on learner" or "I like to see it working"?

If you ever have, then you can identify with my students, many of whom traditional lecture-based lessons do not work well.

Careers in technology are likely to only get more important as society progresses. Sparking interest in electricity, optics and sound could lead a student to a future that not only benefits them, but also society. The world around us is ever changing, therefore, so does our presentation of education.

The questions we are seeking to discover answers to with these projects are:

Why is controlled ascent as important as control descent?

How do sound waves work and how can we apply it to technology?

Can we achieve wireless electricity transfer? Why did Niokla Tesla believe we could?

How does an electric motor work and how could it be improved?

Light is both a wave and a particle. Does that affect how it behaves?

How does force transfer from one object to another?

Are there ways to prevent force from transferring to an object?

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
