This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a great school in a struggling neighborhood in SE DC. The student body is almost 100% African American, low income, and low performing. The administration and staff are so dedicated to helping our students prepare for challenging high school programs and beyond that -college- so that they will be change makers in their neighborhood and beyond. I've never seen such high expectations in a school!
Unfortunately, my students have had very few opportunities to participate in Science.
Although our school has a wonderful science lab - lots of storage, lab tables, sinks - the cabinets are bare. My students deserve to have the materials necessary to learn science by doing science.
My Project
My students are creating presentations for a school-wide energy fair. They are going to research different energy resources and create a tri-fold board to share the information learned with the other grade levels. Students are researching solar, wind, water, hydrogen and fuel cells, and biofuels.
Students will also be creating demonstrations and hands-on activities to engage the entire school as they attend the 8th Grade Energy Fair.
The Pitsco Solar Car kits will be used by my behavioral class to conduct a solar vs electric demonstration during the fair. The potato/lemon clocks will be used to engage students to show how electrical energy can be produced from food! It's going to be a fun-filled day!
