Energy Conservation & Education Internet Video Ad Campaign

My students need only one digital video camera and one digital photo camera to share as they create original content for our energy conservation and education viral internet video project and other classroom projects to come.

I was in the computer lab with a class of seventh grade Language Arts students who had been adding book reviews to our wiki, when one student wondered about the amount of energy consumed by our school computers. This led to a conversation about energy conservation, and soon the discussion turned to energy used by home electronic devices; curious, students went home and began adding up the number of devices in their homes like DVD players, computers, and appliances that, while not in use, are nevertheless on. Many students were surprised at how many small lights were always on in their homes. When the class conducted online research and found a report that between 10 and 15 percent of an average home's electric bill comes from electronic devices on standby, the students wanted to get out the message to their families and community that a lot of energy was going to waste.

Here was a golden opportunity. Instead of merely being passive consumers of messages, these students had an important message of their own. With just a couple of digital tools, my students can begin creating and crafting their own messages for the world to see. They already have experienced using educational blogs, wikis, and email to send messages and share information. Now, they have the desire to become media producers. These communication skills are necessary for 21st century learners to practice and master.

A brainstorming session brought forth an idea for an authentic learning project: working in small collaborative groups, students would conduct research, write energy conservation commercials using persuasive techniques, coordinate props and locations, shoot their videos, and post them to various video hosting venues such as SchoolTube. Then, using internet tools at our disposal such as blogs, wikis, our school website, email, Twitter, and social networking sites, we start a concentrated campaign to drive as many people to view our video commercials. Of course, each viewer will be asked to promote it to a friend or family member! Our goal will be a total of 2,500 views within a week.

With your support, not only will these students gain crucial communication skills, but our message of energy conservation will be spread throughout our community, the state of North Carolina and, hopefully, the world.
