This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an inner-city magnet school in our district with a medical theme. My students come from all over the city, from all different schools, cultures, and backgrounds. In spite of the many obstacles, such as being homeless, my students achieve higher than all the neighboring high schools and have a 100% graduation rate and college acceptance rate.
Unfortunately, many of our students struggle with homelessness.
Our school is located in a low-income area with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. More than three-quarters of our students are from low-income households.
Most of our students select careers in the medical field. Their access to resources needed to prepare them for this path is very limited. DonorsChoose makes it possible for our children to have the necessary tools to succeed.
My Project
A large portion of our students is homeless and transient. They struggle with getting work completed because they don't have the basic tools.
Our students need to start the day with breakfast bars; transports from the shelters do not always get to school in time for breakfast and the students tend to go without food in their stomach.
Students need pens, pencils, flash drives for daily instruction. They need an iPad tripod and stylus to assist with class presentations. Living in the city, our students don't even have access to a store. The homeless shelters have limited space and would not allow students to store supplies and work. These supplies would be one less thing that a homeless student needed to worry about and allows them to focus on the future and all its possibilities.
