My students need a document camera (Elmo) to focus their attention in one place, to learn how to annotate texts, and to learn how to take notes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Free and Appropriate Public Education for All," my students learn in history class. Yet, they know this is not even close to true in their own school and their own lives. Help bring an Elmo to our classroom and help move us closer toward educational equity.
My high school special education students inspire me daily.
Four housing projects, high poverty, and gang violence surround our school. Each of my students has been impacted by inequitable education and/or crime.
Yet, they are resilient. Each day, they come to my English and world history classes, eager to learn. Because of what has been stacked against them, they are reading, on average, at a third-grade level. Besides learning grade-level content, our big goal this year is for each student to grow at least two years in reading. Without such dramatic gains, my students will not have a chance of pursuing the life opportunities they deserve.
They are determined to earn the great American dream of equitable education that theoretically equalizes our society. With their perseverance, they have already overcome more obstacles than should stand in front of anyone. They're fighters and dream-makers in the truest sense.
My Project
In order to reach our reading goals, we need a document camera (Elmo). An Elmo is an advanced projector. With it, I can place a book or piece of paper under the camera and project that image onto the screen. This means I can teach my students how to annotate their books by showing them exactly what I'm writing in my book. Being able to annotate a text is an invaluable reading skill, especially for struggling readers. If my students learn to effectively underline, summarize, and question as they read, their comprehension will skyrocket. An Elmo needs to be connected to a projector which I have access to already. The Elmo will greatly enhance our learning.
If my students can learn from an Elmo every day, their content and skills knowledge will increase and the amount of time we spend on copying and double-checking our place will increase.
Every extra second that goes toward learning is precious in their pursuit of expanded life opportunities.
