My scholars are native to South Memphis and a majority of them live within walking distance of their school. They are very independent and care deeply for their families. They are expected to grow up at middle school, but also come to school and be kids. As many their age, they are working on self-regulating their emotions. If they can shorten the length of time it takes them to regulate back to calming baseline then time in the classroom increases.
My students experience more than most have at their age. They are faced with serious situations early on and expected to pick right back up when they fall and resume regularly programmed activities. It is not that they are not resilient; it is that they are expected to be more resilient than their same aged peers who have access to more resources. I want to meet our students where they are and provide them with healthy outlets. This punching bag will provide a healthy alternative to fighting by teaching my students to use exercise as a way to release endorphins!
