My students would greatly benefit from having a 3D printer to see their engineering projects designed on a computer come to life. The printer and supplies will provide the students the opportunity to explore, create, and design a product that is tangible.
I have a classroom full of energetic fifth graders who are eager to learn and enjoy using different types of materials for their learning.
We are part of a large metropolitan school district. My class is ethnically diverse. Our school has a large population of students who have various disabilities.
With the students so interested in using the computer through coding, blogging, and writing their own digital stories, the next step was designing a product using TinkerCAD software. To prepare the students for those 21st century skills, printing their three dimensional projects is the next logical step. The engineering process is critical to how students will need to think and critique their own projects for the 21st century. By creating their designs, improving and sometimes even redesigning them, the students are developing skills they will use for a lifetime. By having the 3D printer, the students will be provided a way to connect art, engineering, math, and technology.
