Our classroom is a place where students strive for excellence and embrace the many learning opportunities that come their way. Located in Kailua, on the island of Oahu, our school serves approximately 370 students from Pre-School to Grade 6. Many of our students come from Kailua or attend on a Geographic Exception from the nearby city of Waimanalo. We have the best students around! I have the privilege of teaching 55 of them this school year. I hope to serve not just as their teacher, but hope to inspire them and coach them in pursuit of their goals. The students in my ELA courses love to read and write! They love to conduct research on topics of interest and create products that demonstrate their learning. The students in my Math courses love to be challenged mathematically and enjoy solving complex problems.
One reason why I enjoyed being in this class was it was full of friendships and laughter.
We are indeed a learning community! Our faculty is not just committed to academic excellence, but are also committed to providing experiences for students to explore their interests, work on interpersonal and collaboration skills, remain engaged and challenged, and pursue their goals!
My Project
My students need Chromebooks to support their learning. Much of what we do is online, so these tools of technology will help our students participate regularly in online programs to help them excel in reading and math: IXL, Xtra Math (math fact fluency), Reading Plus, Accelerated Reader (AR), Tumble Books, and Google for Education, just to name a few.
“If our schools continue to limit the literacy curriculum to reading and writing traditional, alphabetic, printed texts, then our children will be well prepared for 1950 but ill prepared for 2050” ― Elizabeth Baker, The New Literacies: Multiple Perspectives on Research and Practice.
Additionally, these tools are needed so our students can collaborate digitally and work on skills needed for the 21st century. Students in my previous classes have used technology to participate in and win state-wide essay contests, write and record song parodies to support their learning in other content areas and showcase in our annual Curriculum Fair, and research and explore topics of interests. I want to provide our current students with many of the same opportunities to create and express themselves and practice skills that will support them in being college and career ready!
Our school's mission is, "Every student is entitled to the best education!" I look forward to having our class Chromebooks to continue to work towards making sure that our students are receiving the very best education!
