Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse group of third graders who are coming to me with many different levels of reading comprehension skills. They are a unique deserving bunch attending a Title I school where over 80% of the kiddos are on free or reduced lunch and 20% are English Learners. These little ones strive to do their best and I want to provide them with the opportunity to have access to books at their level so they can succeed.
"Every student can learn, just not the same day or the same way" -George Evans.
This is my first year teaching third grade. I came from a sixth grade classroom where I watched students open their world up as they discovered a love for reading. Their vocabulary expanded and conversations shifted. Its all about finding that first good book.
My Project
The idea behind this project is to create a classroom library where my students can find a book at their reading level that they enjoy to evoke a passion and love of books.
"Reading should not be presented as a chore, or a duty, it should be offered as a gift" - Kate Dimacillo.
Finding an interesting book can be tricky for some students. Kids who read 20 minutes a day at home are 80% more successful on testing than those reading 1 minute a day. Reading matters! Help me provide these kiddos with the gift of reading and endless opportunities through this diverse set of books.
