Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Imagine a classroom of 31 students creating something together that will help them think critically about the decisions they make when confronted by a challenging situation. Our school has an unfortunately high rate of physical confrontations, resulting in disciplinary action. Therefore many of our students miss school because they haven't learned effective ways of dealing with their anger. I teach 7th grade language arts and social studies in low income/high poverty urban neighborhood of Chicago. Our school is vastly under resourced. There is no art program. There have been programs implemented where the students are told about alternative methods of anger management. The only problem is that students are not experiencing the impact, and only passively participating in the process of learning. Students actively learn and retain information by "doing". What I would like to implement is an anti-violence comic book project created and written by the students. I feel that if the students think critically about violence and can create a story that depicts characters overcoming conflict peacefully they will be able to do the same in their own lives. With the help of an experienced facilitator and artist, our students can create something that will influence them and the rest of the school. The culminating piece of the project is to present our comic book to the rest of the school at an assembly designed to promote anti-violence. Our students will be able to proudly show the rest of the school the work they have done. With your donation, we can take an important step in creating schools where violence is a thing of the past!
