My students need a class set of the award winning novel Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and the alternate version of the story, Ender's Shadow, for a comparative study.
I am a reading specialist who has recently been reassigned to teach freshman English. I am incredibly excited about meeting my first class of high school students and being a part of their first experiences in a setting that is apt to be quite intimidating during a time in their lives when they are vulnerable and impressionable. My school is located in the small, rural town of Pilot Mountain at the foot of the picturesque landmark mountain named the same. Our students come from a diverse community served by three elementary schools which all qualify as Title I schools. I imagine these students will be overwhelmed by feelings of excitement as well as fear. This is a time in their lives when they are deciding who they are and where they fit in. The fears of rejection and isolation are ever present as they consider the consequences of each choice they make from what they wear to whether they share a flippant answer in class or their heart felt thoughts. My hope is that I can provide a safe refuge for them to explore aspects of human nature through various genres of literature and discover more about themselves.
My Project
My project involves teaching Ender's Game, a novel I am very passionate about. The author's skill at developing brilliant child characters is an inspiration to young people. I feel that by teaching this novel at the beginning of the semester I will be able to inspire students to think deeply about what they read and about themselves. Interesting materials provide a platform for greater learning. The alternate version will also provide a great opportunity for a comparison study of how the same story can be presented from two different perspectives and the different effect each version has on the reader.
