My Students

My students are from a low income area, where the median income is around $15,000 and $18,000, and they live in a state that spends on average $2,000 less per student than the national average. My students are also predominantly Black and Hispanic. Often my students and students like them are overlooked and not thought of being able to accomplish something special. Everyday I see that sentiment, and everyday I see it not being true.

Despite the many boundaries that rest between them and their goals, they are successful, and they are survivors.

My Project

The students are to create in clay a sculpture of an animal that is listed as an endangered species. After the sculpture is properly rendered in clay and finished with these glazes, the students hold a class wide critique of their project in which they not only discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their project but also the status of the animal they are recreating.

The project prompts dialog between the students that gets them to ask, what actions are we doing that negativity affects the environment, and what can we do, as a class to change that.

It asks the class, "How can we make the world a better place?"
