Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our seventh and eighth grade students are full of grit and agency! As a project-based learning school, our students build twenty-first century skills through critical thinking, collaboration and oral communication. On a typical day, you will see our students huddled together discussing, debating, creating, envisioning and being the drivers of their own learning.
The majority of our students come from bilingual homes and receive free or reduced price lunch, but this does not stop them from having a growth mindset and the ability to take on challenges and conquer rigorous projects.
At our school, culture is important. Not only do we want our students to engage in rigorous and authentic projects that lead to deeper learning, but we also want them to develop a sense of empathy and social justice.
My Project
World Enrichment is a co-teaching PBL course, that combines seventh grade World History with English Language Arts. All of the reading and writing done in the class is centered around history and the connection history has to today's world.
The focus of this project is for students to build a sense of empathy and urgency by thinking critically about current conflict that exists in the world today.
We are seeking a one-to one student set of the novel, "Endangered". While reading this novel, students will be challenged to think critically and inspire solutions about heavy issues facing Africa today. Such issues include conservation, poaching, civil war, child labor, child soldiers, etc.
Many of our students are English language learners; therefore, having a one-to one ratio of novels is perfect for making the reading accessible. Without a doubt, our students will be thankful to add this powerful novel to their reading list this school year!
