My Project

I have my students come up with a list of books they want to read every so often. They can be anything from an author they may not usually have access to. Because of school funds and the specific reading desires of my students, the books they want to read are not always available at our library.

Projects like this help my students in a couple of ways.

It encourages those less likely to read to find something they are interested in. The students talk about the books they requested, which builds hype in the reading community. It also helps the students feel listened to. Middle school students often feel like they are overlooked or overshadowed by those who came before them or those coming after them. By listening to and providing them with the books they are interested in, they realize that their voice matters.
