I teach a very special group of students. They come from many different backgrounds, have different challenges, and many different experiences and hardships. I have learned so much from them. They value their lives and a good education. We are like a family. We laugh, joke, cry, and learn together as a single group. Though it is sometimes challenging with the language barrier, we make it possible to see eye-to-eye.
I strive to create a comfortable, safe, and loving environment for my students.
Without this, my students cannot be themselves nor have a rich learning environment. These kids enter the door each morning, leaving behind different challenges for a day. They're here to learn and to create a better life for themselves.
We face challenges during a pandemic that effects our learning, and experience many more challenges. But we stick with it and work together to learn what we need to succeed.
My Project
We have made it through another term without being dismissed due to a pandemic we are experiencing. What a blessing it has been to remain in school. Lately, I have reached out to our DonorsChoose community and all of my donors have saved our school year! My kids feel loved, and now I want to motivate them to read their little hearts out!
My students have chosen these books for themselves.
This time around they have requested graphic novels, instructional drawing books, and some books about outdoor activities. This will keep them motivated to read. Each one of these titles are approved and chosen by my students. All of them will get what they want. I require 30 minutes a day of reading and it's not possible if they don't enjoy what they read.
I previously took requests from my students and submitted a list of books in a prior DonorsChoose project, and it was funded! It was like Christmas for these kids when I opened the big box of books. I have never had any of these kids coordinate checking out and returning books so that they could all have a chance to read them. This was an enormous boost for their love for reading. They had so much fun, and I know that it made them better readers. My class is very proud of meeting our reading goals for the year so far. These DonorsChoose projects have made that possible. Amazing!
I always keep my students involved with our choices when we submit a DonorsChoose project. With their unique sense of humor and their wide variety of interests and hobbies, we always ask for random things that will help my students and keep them happy. And it works!
