I have 24 young, excited first graders in my classroom, all with different learning abilities, interests, and hobbies. We are from a very rural area, where job possibilities are very limited for families. My students come from a wide range of income, from living in government assisted apartments to living in very nice homes. Despite the problems that my students are up against, on a daily basis they still come to school ready to learn and excited to be there.
Students are able to read classroom books during the school year from my classroom. But what about when they go home in the summer? Most students don’t have any books to read! I want to give my students brand new books that they can “shop” for at the end of the year! Most students have never experienced receiving a brand new book that they “shopped” for and are able to take it home to keep! If this project were to be funded, I would create a book shop during the last week of school that students would be able to choose books from to take home.
