Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly from low-income families and most are free or reduced lunch. They struggle with the most basic skill-reading. Many are so low, they just don't feel they can be successful, so they avoid reading at all costs.
I have provided time in class each day for silent reading, and most of the students are really getting into their books.
The problem is, they do not have books at home, and their parents are unable to get them to the public library. They are very reluctant readers. The students tell me that the books in my room are better than what they have at home. I'm pleased that they are reading-and-they are realizing how much they could actually enjoy reading!
My Project
I have issued a 30 book challenge to my students this year. Their interests include Percy Jackson and A Series of Unfortunate Events. They need exciting and new books to read in order to meet the challenge.
I am looking for books to both use as rewards and to read in class.
I have requested they read from all genres: biographies, mysteries, graphic novels, as well as adventure.
The latest research shows if we can get them to read, we can provide a lasting impact on their lifelong learning. The goal is to improve their skills by at least one year.
