Ms. Edelman from Des Moines IA is requesting lab equipment through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Encouraging Teens to Read

My students need good engaging books that are diverse and vary from what they usually read. I included box sets of some of their favorite series so they can fly through one book onto another.

My Students

My school has a very diverse student body, and there are a lot of different cultures. I have students from Burma that grew up in refugee camps in Thailand to students that grew up in El Salvador and Africa. A lot of them also come from harsh conditions even though I don't define them by that. Instead, I see them as unique, amazing and talented individuals and I want to give them everything I can in my class. A lot of my students don't have a lot at home, including books and even basics like warm winter clothing. I need help in making sure that my students are getting everything they need so that they can get the most out of their educational experience.

My Project

Based on my experience, these are some books that my students have requested. We do not have them in our library as our funding has to go to other things. I want to give my students the books they are interested in but it's hard for me to afford them. If I can provide them with these books, hopefully it will encourage them to keep reading. I want to build good habits and literacy skills that they can carry with them when they move on to high school. These books will help with fluency and comprehension for years to come.
