Our district has provided computers and laptops for projects and research, but very few tools such as digital cameras to encourage student created digital work to document and support projects, & experiments. These tools will make student reports and projects come alive with multimedia content.
Our students are hard working and eager to learn, but have large gaps in the areas of science and social studies.
We have found that many of our students are transient or struggle with language as we have a very diverse population. Because many of these students are working to learn basic skills that is the emphasis in our school and other subjects are integrated into Reading, Writing, and Math curriculum.
Our school has a very high free and reduced lunch rate which hovers just over 70%. There are 580 students in our school. Many of our families do not have access to digital cameras and computers at home so they rely on our school to provide them.
My Project
Each year I ask my 5th graders to research environmental topics and create a project to teach others what they have learned. I would like students to add pictures of their own to their projects to support the need for real life examples of how these environmental topics relate to their lives at home,at school, and in their communities.
In this Project I am requesting,2 digital cameras, SD cards and a docking station kit. With these tools I look forward to seeing environmental images from the students unique perspectives.
This project is essential to student learning because each year students are missing important science content and this project will help to expose them to science topics relevant to today's culture.
It will also require them to use the scientific method as part of their project. I have not found a better way make science more meaningful then to educate students about the problems in our environment and ask them to find ways to affect positive change at home, in their community and at school.
