I teach in a low income/high poverty area. Most of my students come from broken homes, and many have had drugs impact their lives. My goal is to make school a safe place for them, someplace where they come and know they are safe and where someone has put their best interests first.
I try to create hands-on projects that the students will enjoy.
I find that my students learn best that way. Hands-on projects help to hold my students' interests better and help them focus.
My Project
How do you encourage a struggling reader? Especially when they are an older student and all of the books that they can read are for the younger child. You make it fun for all ages! Please help me get some Fairy Tale STEM and coding bees for my struggling readers.
Students read better when they have lots of practice, and what better way to practice then to be the teacher to younger students.
I want to team up my struggling readers with students in the younger classrooms in my school. My students would visit the classrooms and read the Fairy Tales to small groups of students and complete the STEM activities with them. They would use the coding bee to explain cause and effect or even create and write a story of their own. They can even help the younger students create and write their own stories too!
Through these activities, my struggling readers will get practice reading which will increase their fluency. The younger students will get exposure to more vocabulary and will encourage them to read more. It’s a win for everyone involved!
