This year I'm teaching in a Title school with an approximately 50% free and reduced price lunch rate. I teach in an EL Shelter class that is made up of a very diverse population speaking multiple different languages. All of my students have different learning needs, but they are enthusiastic about being in school and learning.
I have a fun and energetic group of students this year!
They are excited about learning and love reading and discussing books that they've read.
My Project
These novels will help give my students exposure to two different types of fiction novels. Having a class set of copies of each book would mean that each student has their own copy of the book to read and reference during the instructional read aloud. During the read aloud, I stop frequently to model how to think critically about the book, and give the students the chance to think deeply about and discuss character development, the author's message, author's craft, and more.
Many of my students do not have access to complex novels like these, and if they do they do not have the tools they need to connect with these texts in a meaningful way.
Having a class set of books means that each student has their own copy to read while I read aloud, which gives them the opportunity to practice how to read and think about books like this. In turn, this will help them discover a love for reading and give them the tools they need to attack these types of books independently.
I have a very diverse group of readers, and would love to continue fostering their enjoyment of reading as well as their ability to think critically and discuss what they have read no matter their level.
