As a teacher, I feel that I am responsible for expanding the horizons of every student that I teach. One of the best ways to expand their horizons is through reading books! Books can take us to faraway places; they can help us solve problems, become inventors and they give us something to hold that belongs to us, even if it's just for a minute.
Children need to see themselves in the books they read.
They need to feel a connection to what they are learning. By offering books that are multiculturally diverse, I am allowing my students to see themselves as these characters and to live vicariously through the characters in the book. I need to expand my library so that I can expand the minds and imaginations of my students.
I have amazing students and their love of reading is growing fiercely day by day. Their reading levels are all over the board and I need to be able to offer quality books to my lowest readers and to my highest readers. I need books that will capture their attention and leave them wanting more. I need your help to be able to satisfy their needs.
My students are awesome! They really get lost in reading and enjoy reading books. This is an amazing thing for a teacher to be able to say, except I am running out of books for them! The are reading up books faster than I can shelf them. I need new books to keep their interests sparked. I need books that are going to challenge them and books that they can see themselves reflected in. I need books that will help them learn and also books that will allow their imaginations to run wild.
Books are their gateway to a world of unknown territory.
These books will help them explore life from the viewpoint of a dog. These books will expose them to other cultures that they can only learn about in Social Studies. These books will teach them about habitats and Chinese Lanterns! These books will make them wiser citizens and help them to be kinder to the world around them.
