I teach in a diverse elementary school representative of many cultures, ethnicities, and languages. Nearly all students come from low-income households.
Resilient, resourceful, and ready to learn, my students are prepared to take on these new and unusual challenges we face during COVID-19.
My Project
I would argue that reading and critical thinking are the two most important skills students learn in elementary school. It's essential that students have a firm grasp on these skills before entering middle school in order to be successful. This project will give students the resources to grow in both of these areas.
Breakout EDU allows me to gamify learning and engage students no matter where we're learning from.
With this program, students are given a series of clues in order to unlock each level and escape from the game. With over 1,700 games available, I can incorporate this resource into any lesson I'm teaching.
This project also includes new nonfiction and culturally relevant books to add to our classroom library. I find that students are most interested in books where they see themselves or learn new information. While virtual, I plan to use these books as read-alouds over Zoom. When we return to the building, students will be able to select the books for independent reading. With new books in their hands and access to Breakout EDU, my students will surely be on the path to success!
