Our elementary is unique in our district. It is Kindergarten through second grade. Currently in our school there are 9 first grade classes of 25 students. The students in our school come from different family make-ups and socioeconomic status. Last year I had 3 students that were in foster homes with potential families waiting to be adopted. This is the most I have had at any one time. Family dynamics keep changing every year.
In my classroom, students have different activity levels.
Some of the students enjoy at your seat activities that are quiet. Other students prefer work that is with a team and more hands on. I try to alternate activities in the classroom that meet the needs of all of my students.
Students work better if they are comfortable. My students over the years have shown different physical learning styles. They like standing and leaning over the tables. They like working on the floor. I also have had a few that are like me, and just need to bounce a leg up and down. I would like to offer more choices for them to become more comfortable, and in turn become more successful in their learning.
My Project
These students are at different levels. In my current library, I do not have a lot of beginning level readers for students who are not currently reading at a first grade level. These readers will help them practice and strengthen their skills, because they are on a level they can read. Quality reading resources are important to help beginning readers become successful readers. Having a variety of books can help students find an a topic that interests them to practice their reading. Having a variety of leveled readers will also help me in creating individual book bags for these beginning readers.
