This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Literacy development shouldn't stop at 3:30 everyday when students leave the classroom and return home. Young readers need to engage with books after school and on the weekends to build strong literacy skills.
I teach first grade at a school that is 99% African-American; my students come from very low income families and many of them are falling below grade average in reading.
Many of my parents understand the importance of reading and want to help their children succeed, but they simply do not have the resources to provide a literacy-rich environment at home. Some of my students don't have a single book to call their own.
My Project
A classroom lending library is critical in supporting students' literacy skills at home! Each Friday, students will have the opportunity to choose a "just right" book, one that is matched to their current reading level. They sign this book out and get to bring it home over the weekend! We need "just right" books in our lending library so that the student feels like a successful reader at home.
For developing readers, literacy in the classroom just isn't enough.
My students are excited about books and hardworking in their quest to become successful readers, and they deserve the chance to read in their homes. Please help give them this opportunity!
