My students are inner-city teens that are taking on challenging advanced coursework in English. They are excited to learn, want to do well, and appreciate public education. Although many of them recognize that their childhood love of reading has fallen by the wayside due to other responsibilities, they still love to study literature together in class. Many of them have expressed the desire to read more often, and read a variety of books.
As they prepare to enter their Junior year, most of my students cannot easily afford materials.
I want them to have the best chance at success; they deserve it!
My Project
I currently teach 20 students who are enrolled in challenging IB Literature coursework in the 2019-2020 school year. They begin the course with a summer reading assignment, in which they are expected to make marginal notes, as well as respond to questions in a notebook.
Although these students are willing to check their reading material out at the local library, I want them to have their own copy of the summer-reading book.
I believe all students have the ability to do well, but they need developed skills to achieve success in more challenging coursework. Having their own text and notebook can help reinforce the practice of notetaking, reading closely, and demonstrating an engagement with the work being studied. I'd like to give these 20 students that opportunity.
