My students are sweet, compassionate, and incredibly curious. They are eager to learn more about themselves, their history, and the world around them. These kids are courageous enough to have important conversations in the classroom. They allow themselves to be vulnerable; and therefore, allow for moving, empowering, and healing work to occur in our class community. Their zest for learning, growing, and making a difference constantly reminds me of my purpose and it inspires me every day.
Many of my students come from low-income households that are rich repositories of accumulated cultural knowledge.
They bring a special blend of background knowledge, personal life experiences, skills, and world views to our Title I school and they reflect a wide range of cultural and linguistic diversity similar to that of our urban community.
The books that have been requested for this project will support my vision to create a more inclusive classroom library that encourages my students to become life-long readers while providing them an opportunity to see themselves and others in the books we read.
Allowing my students to have access to books that mirror their experiences and shine a light on multiple and diverse perspectives is key in our work for equity.
That being said, this project contains books by BIPoC authors that portray characters who have lived similar experiences to my diverse group of students, and who think, look, and speak like them. These purposeful books will encourage my students to celebrate our differences while teaching them tolerance and acceptance of all people.
Thank you for supporting our classroom. With your donation, you are empowering my students to really see themselves, and others, in literature. Your generosity will make a difference for my students!
