Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are capable of achieving far beyond expectations. Many have experienced traumas that contribute to misbehavior while others persevere despite setbacks. We believe that all of our students are capable of overcoming obstacles. With support from teachers, staff, parents, and guardians, we can improve and sustain academic achievement as well as the mental and emotional well-being of all students.
Most of our students model appropriate behavior on a daily basis and we would like to recognize, praise, and acknowledge their achievements.
My Project
An effective Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Plan strategically defines, teaches, and supports pro-social student behavior to promote a positive school environment. One way we support student behavior is by reinforcing pro-social behavior through our Eagle Cent Choice Awards. Students earn 'Eagle Cents' when they are caught being Safe, Respectful, and/or Responsible. They turn in their Eagle Cents to receive the Eagle Cent Choice Award. Recipients get to choose one award from a variety of incentives. This component of our system highlights students who meet the behavioral expectations.
Rewarding students for meeting behavioral expectations is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur.
Schools without an effective PBIS plan tend to focus on reacting to individual student misbehavior by reprimanding, revoking privileges, office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions to reduce disruptive behavior. Although these forms of discipline are often useful and necessary, they are reactive and being proactive is the most effective alternative to suspension.
After speaking with several students and stakeholders about incentives, I created a list of desirable items. The items I am requesting are varied so that there is something for everyone. Unfortunately, our current incentives are running out! To continue rewarding our students, we NEED your help.
