Encouraging Critical Thinking Through Games

My students need prize support to reward good sportsmanship and thinking during our overnight celebrations. I need 8 copies of Yahtzee, 9 copies of Uno, 6 Star Wars Miniatures booster packs, and 8 copies of the book "Ultimate History of Video Games". In addition, I need one DVD copy of the documentary "King of Kong" to show to kids at the overnights.

I teach ninth grade science at an urban high school in Nebraska. I also run a game club at the school that serves over 70 students. This request is for those students. The goals of the club have been to 1) encourage students to think critically by making the cost/benefit decisions that are necessary for playing games 2) to allow a social forum where those students can interact with others and improve social skills and 3) to allow for a forum for students to share games with each other so that any student, regardless of family history or economic situation, can afford to have fun while learning to think.

The majority of students who are members of the club qualify for free and reduced lunch. Therein lies the problem. We have no budget for the club other than what I and the students are able to contribute. One of our most beloved activities has been to have overnight sleepovers (properly supervised) at our school cafeteria to have some extended game experiences that are just not possible during the time period of a normal after school period. Kids love them. We eat a pizza dinner and play games all night. The problem is that all of that costs money, and with the recession it has become nearly impossible for any of us to afford the costs that are involved.

One of the big features of the overnight is that we reward students who are good sports, proper social models, and who succeed at game tournaments. This allows students themselves to benefit from their good choices, but also allows them to take games home to share with their families. I deeply believe that when students or their families are playing games together, they are less likely to be in bad situations out on the streets or running with violent crowds. They are less likely to join gangs. The more that I can do to encourage them and their families to stick to games, the better off they will be.

By contributing to the prize support for these events, you'll be helping to ensure that students learn cost/benefit analysis and other thinking skills that are useful in life regardless of what their future careers are going to be. In addition, you'll be encouraging kids to play games over negative pursuits and will also be benefiting the families of prize winners. Thank you so much for your help!
