This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My amazing classes are made up of 50 children who speak 15 different languages and represent a beautiful array of cultural diversity. Although the students share a classroom, attend the same school, and make up a portion of the students all receiving free lunch, their individual stories are very different and close to my heart.
My students are all students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) students.
They have only been in the United States for a year or less and have limited or significant interruptions in their formal education history. They want to learn English, and they want to learn about American culture. This is evident in their persistent hard work, attendance, and the smiles that shine upon each of their faces.
My Project
We have recently started an event within our classroom community called Coffee and Community. It was such an amazing event, and so many people from the community came out to support the kiddos and build relationships. We had representatives from the Homeless Coalition, Muslim Student Association from a local university, YMCA, Refugee Connect along with numerous administrators and diverse groups of students. We would like to continue this and involve families! We have talked it up and gotten invites out without specific dates, but rather to encourage families to show up, be involved and enjoy this time in their child's school environment. We will use the yummy Kcup coffee pods and cups to serve the community members, families and students. We hope to provide them with sugar and creamer when desired, and we are requesting bowls because we have so many oatmeal packets from our last event that we would like to share that with everyone as well.
I am aware of how important family is to these children, and I want them to know I honor and value each of them and their stories/journeys!
I hope that you will help us get this awesome project funded and be able to involve families by hosting and continuing this event.
