I teach 4th grade in Southern California at a high poverty elementary school. Many of my scholars (students) are English Language Learners, some having just arrived from another country. A majority of them receive free or reduced meals.
I strongly believe in creating a classroom atmosphere where each scholar is valued and respected.
My school's motto is to be "Responsible, Respectful, and Ready to Learn." Character Education, Growth Mindset, and Classroom Community are life long skills that my scholars work on throughout their 4th grade school year.
My Project
In the past, my scholars and I have always set aside time for our class chapter book read-aloud. This year, I want to incorporate a devoted time for "Picture Book a Day."
I know first-hand that reading can take you anywhere, even if it's only momentary.
The emphasis and priority of picture books often gets lost in the upper grades. I know that there's so many valuable lessons, skills, and discussions that picture books can teach my scholars.
I am requesting a variety of picture books and audio CD's that will encourage positive and powerful classroom discussions among my scholars. I chose books that will make my scholars think and reflect on the lesson in the book. Classroom community and acceptance of others is a huge component, therefore several of my book choices touch on these themes. A positive growth mindset is also a critical theme that will help my scholars not only in this school year, but in the years to come. I want our "Picture Book a Day" time to be something my scholars look forward to every day.
