Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student population is predominately minority with a large percentage of children of migrant farm workers. 92% of our students qualify for the free/reduced price lunch program and 87% are classified as English Language Learners. According to Home Surveys, only 21% of parents finished high school, and of those, only 8% have attended college.
Many of our students struggle academically: as many as 68% of our students read below grade level.
In spite of their personal challenges, which often include fatigue and hunger, our students come to school every day eager to learn. Thanks to our generous meal program, we can feed the physical hunger, but we need help fueling their future. We need to provide opportunity for these students to break the cycle of illiteracy where the average reading level in the community stagnates at grade 5.
My Project
Our students struggle to read. Many find themselves wiggling in their plastic chairs not only mentally struggling with the task at hand, but physically as well. These bean bag chairs can offer students a comfortable, alternative seating option. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment.
Classrooms designed to support participative learning, especially in reading, increase student engagement.
Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work. An uncomfortable student, is a distracted and unproductive student.Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. And flexible seating helps make learning fun.
