Help me give my students a night they will remember as they help plan their prom with the sequin backdrop/table runners, balloons and other table decor.
I teach in an urban academy community school that provides a structured safe haven for alternative learners. We deliver a highly specialized curriculum designed to engage children where they are developmentally delayed. Our academy is a non-profit school that fosters belonging and acceptance for every child. Our school is filled with eager to learn students, innovative, hardworking staff members, and supportive administrative leaders.
Specifically, I teach high school English and it is important for me to always make sure my students are provided with every opportunity and resource to be able to learn, work, and grow as students.
My classroom is the home of 50 eager learners. Since our school district reports 100% of our students as economically disadvantaged, students lean on me and our school to provide them with what they need to learn. By understanding the way children learn best, I know it is important to not only make sure they are provided with basic school supplies and math and reading resources, but also recognizing when they need assistance with their basic needs being met as well so that they can learn and work to the best of their abilities and become successful, productive adults in the future.
My Project
Students in my Event Planning class have selected the theme "Enchanted Waters" for this year's prom theme. This theme blends the concepts of an elegant, formal ball with the swirling colors of the ocean. Various sizes of balloons will be used to create floating bubbles. The silver sequin backdrop, in addition to other visual elements, will be used to construct the background for their professional pictures. The various table decor including the curly blue table skirt, royal blue and turquoise sequin table runners and seashells, along with additional supplies, will bring the sparkle of an elegant ball as well as the beauty of nature to my students for a night they will remember.
In addition to creating a budget, making decisions, and using math skills, students will utilize the various prom supplies to plan, design and construct their representation of "Enchanted Waters" for their peers.
Students will have to make executive decisions as a group to cut unnecessary wants in order to adhere to a tight budget. They will also utilize math skills in order to figure out cost of tickets, number of tables needed based on the number of students attending as well figuring out how much food, cake and drinks to prepare. Finally, the Prom Committee students will work in conjunction with the Advanced Art Class to plan and create the visual aspects of their oceanic experience.
The students attending this prom are from low income households and are unable to splurge on typical high school extracurricular activities. As prom coordinator, I am trying to keep the cost of tickets to a minimum so these special needs students can have every opportunity to participate in activities similar to those in a typical high school, activities these students truly deserve!
