Enamorarse De La Lectura. Falling in Love With Reading.
Help me give my students who speak another language a chance to fall in love with reading and not stress about another aspect of learning a new language!
I work in a small community, about 7,500 people, that has been growing culturally diverse in recent years. My students are curious and open to trying new things, as long as I'm there to support, encourage, and work alongside them. They are willing and want to have open conversations about complex topics, like racism within our own community or stereotypes about the LGBTQ community. They are your average kids who are fun, bright, and silly. We are also your average school family that sometimes argues and fights, but while some can be jerks, they are all my jerks!
One thing I love about my job is that each student has encouraged me to expand my own learning.
Because of them, I am not afraid of changing something that isn't working in the class or admitting when I make a mistake. They know I am human and together we've learned a lot.
My Project
These books, like The Hunger Games and Divergent, will make a big difference in my classroom and my school. Currently, my school has more high school students who are just learning English so when it comes to reading for enjoyment, many of the students don't have much choice when it comes to what they can read in Spanish, and they aren't ready for English, yet!
It will make a difference because they will have a wider selection to read and will have one less thing to worry about when it comes to learning the English language.
Students want to read books that they are comfortable with. Without books in their language, they will fight against having to learn the language.
