Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I, STEAM Academy School with minority students that come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and/or immigrant families.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and have diverse academic needs that go beyond the school day.
Because my students have such diverse academic needs, it's imperative that they are offered a variety of learning opportunities and experiences that foster motivation, interest, confidence, and engagement. I know that engaging my students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) projects will offer the diverse learning opportunities my students need.
My Project
Our project will help us ENABLE THE FUTURE through our 3D printing STEM program.
These 3D printer, filament, and assembly materials will be used to teach my students the design and engineering process of developing prosthetic hands for the purpose of helping children who do not have two functioning hands.
Students will locate the prosthetic hand files from the Enable the Future website (www.enablingthefuture.org), will learn to load the files, scale them to the appropriate size, and print them with our 3D printer. Students will also learn to load our printer with filament and will use the assembly materials to assemble each hand. Our goal is create a total of eight prosthetic hands.
3D printing projects not only aim to develop my students' 21st Century Skills, but will also target character development as students learn empathy during the process of creating for others in need.
This is a wonderful opportunity for my students to produce a final product that could potentially change the life of a child!
