I teach fifth grade at a small, urban school. My students come from many walks of life and many different cultures. While there are students that have lived in the neighborhood their entire lives, others move around the city (sometimes more than once in a year), and some are new to our country and are struggling to learn our language and culture.
We celebrate our similarities and our differences!
Through shared experiences, we create our own unique community. My students are enthusiastic learners who enjoy scientific investigation, problem-solving and shared reading experiences. In our classroom, we cheer each other on and rejoice in our successes together!
My Project
For the past six years, I have taught only math and science. This year I am teaching reading as well. Though I have always tried to keep a classroom library, it is admittedly small and sparsely populated with books mostly related to my science units. It's time to fill the shelves! The classroom library should be a center of our classroom community.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from many titles, across many genres, at their own reading level.
The Grade 5 Classic Grade Level Library (52 book set) will help to establish a base library from which students can choose books. The Harry Potter and Percy Jackson boxed sets will provide students with an opportunity to explore popular series. Finally, the four graphic novels will provide a taste of a genre that many students have not yet explored.
The best way to create a lifelong love of reading is to create an environment rich in literature. With these books, my students can become a confident community of readers.
