I have the honor of working with 12 special education students. This is the second year that I have worked with these students and they are now in first grade. When they came to me in Kindergarten, they knew nothing, not even how to hold a pencil. Over the past 2 years, not only are they holding pencils, they are using these pencils to write and copy sentences that I thought would never be possible. That's not all though! I have about half of my class reading! Every time they are able to read a leveled book, I remember why I took this job and it helps me through the rest of the day.
Unfortunately, we do not have an ample supply of books on their level. My proposal is to request enough books that the students are able to take books home overnight and bring them back the following day to swap with their classmates.
These days, all the kids are hooked on electronic games. If I can get just a handful of students passionate about reading, I would say that I was a successful teacher. They are eager to learn how to read new books and are so excited to share their reading with a fellow teacher. I would love to continue to encourage them, but I am running out of resources for them. I would hate for them to put their learning and passion for reading on hold.
So, it would be great to get some books to add to our collection.
