My students are a bright and brilliant group of young people who are in the process of learning to truly grow through their education and community. My group of students this year are such a unique group of individuals that have been celebrating each others' differences. I am extremely proud of the community that they are building and have seen them grow tremendously.
The school is located in a lower income area in the Silicon Valley.
Most of the students at the school receive free and reduced-price lunch. It is a Title I school in East San Jose, California with a high population of English Learners. Although we are lacking many resources, the fighting spirit found within the teachers and students push us further towards our goals.
My Project
Representation is important. Having students be able to see part of who they are makes them feel valued, but doing does not always have a simple solution. I am now in my third year of teaching and am still trying to fins ways to help my students feel represented within the classroom and school communities. One way has been suggested to me by different students themselves over my three years of teaching. My first two years of teaching, I was doing an intern model to work towards my teaching credential, which meant I was teaching during the day and prepping, planing, and going to school at night. This year I am finally able to work on their ideas to life.
Students want to see themselves reflected in photographs along with their work on the walls, which was the prior (and only) way that they were represented in the classroom before.
In this age of social media, print photos are disappearing. Pictures are seen and quickly forgotten. My students shouldn't feel seen and quickly forgotten too. I want to honor their request and have their pictures, and made memories, seen throughout the classroom.
The photo printer will be used to make the photos taken throughout the year. The printer needs ink and paper that as well. I have also previously purchased small photo printers, HP sprockets, that print mini sticker pictures that need more photo paper. Lastly, the ink pads will be used for the students to decorate any photos during a time that I will call Making Memories that will combine art and writing. Thank you so very much for considering helping my students feel represented and empowered!
