Empowering young women through media is one of the goals of my journalism course. My students are beginning to discover how media helps create community, seeks to report the truth and has an obligation to the public. Media can also be used to share their stories.
Our school is the only one in our city that provides educational opportunities for pregnant teens and young mothers.
Our goal is to provide an educational environment that encourages and nurtures young women so that they will go on to become great mothers, great scholars and great citizens. Many of our young women face internal and external struggles yet many are determined to succeed, despite the obstacles they face. This is the first year we're offering a course in Journalism and Media. We've received a video camera through a grant. We need a laptop for video editing, as well as news reporting on various assignments.
My Project
We are requesting an ASUS laptop with DVD/DVR and editing capabilities. This will enable students to edit and create video in various locations. Students will also be able to work on other journalism assignments such as the student-created monthly newsletter. My students expressed a strong desire to create video documentaries about our school, their lives, their communities. They want the world to know that they are not merely statistics or numbers. They are young women who have dreams and goals. They want to be able to take care of themselves and their children and to better their lives through education.
This project is important to my students.
They want to share their stories, in the hope that there will be greater understanding of their situations and their lives. They want respect for who they are and who they can become.
