Empowering Writers through Poetry

My students need 13 poetry books that we can use to immerse ourselves in during writing workshop.

My Students

If you remember what it was like to read poetry for the first time, then you'll know what it's like for our second graders. They become empowered writers through poetry because they see another way to express themselves besides writing narratives in story form. Students need an eclectic poetry mix.

My students come from varied backgrounds because we have a very diverse population (our school has students from 14 countries) and a very diverse socioeconomic dynamic.

Many students are on free or reduced lunch and are unable to purchase books for their homes. Many of them only have exposure to different genres in their classrooms.

My Project

When my students are engaged in writing workshop, they need touchstone and mentor texts to immerse themselves in. Only by being immersed in a variety of poetry can they fully understand what poetry is and therefore be able to write poems. The students in the past have become empowered writers through poetry. We have built community in our classrooms by opening ourselves up during the poetry unit. We learn much more about one another when they express their feelings in poems. I have had to scramble around for a variety of poetry because our school lacks many poetry anthologies and I can't afford to buy a sufficient amount of books for this unit. This will change my students' lives because they will understand poets so much better and also understand themselves better. It shows through their own poems.

My students will appreciate the diverse range of poetry because they are a very diverse group.

We have a multicultural community and it is important that they see students like themselves in books. Not only do they need to see different races in books, but different social classes and family dynamics that are different. They need to be able to express themselves like poets. Our school is unable to fund materials needed for writing workshop so please help us. Thanks so much.
