The learning process is driven by my students being able to see and create visual images in their minds. It is essential to engage my active learners with visual representations to enhance their learning experiences. Many of my kindergarten students have never been to school before, so capturing and sustaining their attention can become a monumental daily task. This year 85% of the children in my class come from homes where English is not their primary language. Empowering the children in my class to make meaning often involves utilizing visually interesting material.
"Use a picture.
It is worth a thousand words."~Tess Flanders
This quote is so true when it comes to second language learners and young children in general. It is estimated that 80% of our learning is derived through our vision. My students exhibit a natural curiosity and an eagerness to learn. Their enthusiasm and joy for learning is highly motivating and downright contagious. Each of the children in my class are unique, spirited and filled with a sense of wonderment.
Visual representations are a powerful way to bring learning alive and provide equal access for all students. Children will benefit from having a document camera in the class in a myriad of ways. Each book I read will become a big book. During sharing children can magnify their items thus eliminating the need to pass their pictures and toys around. It will be used as a 21st century science tool so that students can examine earth worms and bugs up close. Students can model math problems using manipulatives making learning easy and fun. We will celebrate student achievement and examples of exemplary work.
