I am a literacy coach in my school district working mainly with 3-6 grade teachers, and at times 4K-12 teachers. A big part of my job description is developing and delivering professional development. One main objective during these professional learning times is to provide space for teachers to enhance their reflective practice.
Reflection is a crucial component of a teacher's life and is necessary to build teaching expertise.
Through reading, conversation, application, self-assessment, and reflection, teachers learn and develop their teaching theory and art.
My Project
Teacher reflective practice takes a variety of forms - individually, group, to whole school; it can involve professional text or student materials. This project involves professional texts and student literature. Teachers will come together to study, discuss, and reflect on professional texts, and hold each other accountable to implement new learning. They will also gather to read and discuss adolescent fiction to stay current on new student fiction and to reflectively develop processes together to deepen and enhance their students' depth of reading comprehension.
What am I going to do to manage where I am right now professionally to positively impact the future?
That is the question all teachers can better answer when they pause and are mindful, or reflective, about their teaching practice.
