Help me give my students an environment that fosters choice and collaboration to learn in. The wiggle seats will allow my students to be more engaged during learning, by allowing them to move in a meaningful way.
Research has shown that flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and helps them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. I want to empower my students to make their own choices, learn to identify what helps them learn, and practice these skills in a structured environment.
My students are excited, energetic learners who are craving more knowledge and experiences.
In my classroom alone, I have students with Autism, Behavioral and emotional disorders, struggling learners, highly capable students, and everything in between. My students come from all over the world including Ghana, Ukraine, Mexico, and the United States. I have students that speak with an adult level vocabulary as well as beginning English language learners. My classroom is diverse in many ways, but my students thrive when working together.
These items will directly impact every student in my classroom. Each student will have the ability to choose their own work environment depending on their specific needs. The seating allows students to rock, wobble, fidget, and move. This allows oxygen to flow more freely to their brain and improves concentration.
Kayla Delzer wrote, “Giving students choices about their physical classroom space teaches them higher-order thinking skills." By providing students with choices like wobble stools and medicine ball chairs, I will be teaching students to recognize their personal needs, advocate for themselves, and make their own decisions to promote success.
These items will directly impact student learning in my classroom because students will be more engaged, have improved concentration, and will build self esteem through the process of making their own choices.
