"Education breeds confidence. Confidence breeds hope. Hope breeds peace." (Confucius) I teach with a wonderful staff whose goal is ensure the lives of our students are better at the end of the day than at the beginning. We believe we can make a life long impact on the lives of our students.
My highly active and precocious group of second graders often come from families struggling with putting food on the table and paying rent.
These students often begin school behind academically with limited exposure compared to other students who are not in poverty. As a result of exposure and access, many of my students may start school with a limited vocabulary and with less academic knowledge in various content areas. My students are often asked to make a high jump without the same running start of students who are not in high poverty homes.
My Project
The bridge that can serve as the great equalizer is technology. My young students are eager to learn, willing to take risks, and highly capable of using technology to explore, create, communicate and collaborate. The use of Chromebooks will allow my students to break down the walls of our classroom and create more life experiences. There is clear evidence that involvement in art correlates with success in math and reading. We can explore collections from around the world while studying continents and taking virtual field trips. My students would love to expand their horizons by creating and recording their own music and videos. One of the most important programs to help students acquire the tools they need to become self-sufficient learners is a balanced literacy program. Utilizing technology will allow me to teach the same information in a variety of ways to different learning styles. This way I can meet the needs of each of my students.
