Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am honored to have a classroom of such intelligent and hard working students. These kids are growing up in a high-poverty and high-crime area and still thriving. I'm hoping that empowering students through art will show them ways to make money while doing what they love.
My students are learning quickly how to improve their artistic abilities.
It's amazing to see how fast they pick up the lessons and techniques I'm teaching them. One of the biggest issues with teaching art is the student question "why do I need to know this?" I like to tie my lessons with 21st Century Skills they will use in the workforce: showing students how the projects they are working on correlate to careers in the work force. Empowering students through art isn't just about showing them they have the skills to create--but by making those skills relevant to them. My project will show my students how to use photoshop on a computer capable of handling the program. They will be able to learn how to scan their drawings into the computer and clean them up digitally for uses in advertising, logos, or book illustrations. My ultimate goal is to use the computer for several projects--each touching on different tools available to them through the programs of Adobe Creative Suite.
My Project
There simply are not enough resources or financial backing for every student to have their own computer--especially for every computer to have photoshop installed. If I'm able to utilize one computer with the capability, I can get the program loaded on and allow students to take turns working from it. I also have the capability to tap into a projector so students can see me working directly on the screen, and mimic these actions when it's their turn. My idea is to create a children's book with illustrations. I'll allow each group of students to come up with a page or two for the book and create the illustrations to go with it. Once the drawings are complete they can take turns scanning them into the computer and cleaning them up digitally. Once the image is complete they can include the text for their page(s). Whether or not I choose the subject of the book, give suggestions, or allow students to come up with original ideas is still to be determined.
Donations towards this project will not only open up a range of new project opportunities for students--it will also give them a computer which is always in the classroom--which they are able to use for researching, looking for source material for projects, and scanning in their work to keep on digital file.
My job is empowering students through art, which is why the opportunity to have this project funded fits perfectly into my classroom aspirations. Thank you so much for your consideration.
