Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our art room is bustling with creativity, exploration and reflection. My dream is to have a writing center in the art room that empowers students to write artist statements that describes art processes, explains challenges & provides for an avenue for self-reflection." Art is the voice of the heart".

Our school houses first through third grade students who are vivacious learners and a delicious mixing pot of nationalities.

Our school is a safe, nurturing environment for students to take risks while learning and feel supported. The school is located in a low income neighborhood and is provided assistance through Title I funds for students' supplies. We are considered a high poverty district.

My Project

The artist statement writing center provides students the opportunity to self-reflect on their art. The artists can describe a specific art process that they delved into and this will allow for further comprehension for future creations. It can be used as an avenue for them to express their challenges or frustrations which can be a calming and releasing mechanism where they felt heard. Furthermore, the writing center can promote positivity and highlight their successes. Students will be encouraged to title their artwork and identify themselves. This center would be a win-win because it would also support the classroom teachers with implementing writing and expression in another subject area such as art. This form of cross curricular connection allows students to see the importance of writing in the ever changing world.

By having the artist statement writing center in the art room with lined paper, markers and glue, it would make a huge difference for the students, me, parents and my colleagues.

The students gain a voice within their art, their teacher will gain an understanding of a process or a particular challenge, a parent can have understanding of the concepts learned and my colleagues will be supported with additional writing time. Reflection affords higher order thinking and this is a skill that is needed in the world today!
