A quote by author William Plomer states that, "Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected." For too long, educators have separated the arts from academic studies. In our classroom, we strive to empower students through art by integrating art with our curriculum.
Our school is located in a very rural town.
Around 74% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. The students in my class are creative thinkers and problem-solvers. They love to find new ways of completing given tasks and thrive in an environment that integrates the arts with other subject areas. Due to lack of funding, the materials necessary to foster their creativity aren't always available.
My Project
Having 5 new chromebooks would greatly impact the way we integrate the arts into our curriculum. My students would use these resources to create stop-motion videos to enhance their reading comprehension. We would be able to use the Scratch MIT website to animate student-made drawings of individuals we study in our social studies curriculum by using coding skills. Students would also be able to bring to life their writings by using this same website where they would create, in detail, the characters from their stories. If given the opportunity to work with these five new Chromebooks, my students would also be able to design presentations and magazine covers that illustrate mastery of our science curriculum. For instance, one project that we would design would be a non-fiction magazine cover that illustrates the need for renewable energy resources.
By donating to this project, individuals would be supporting the creativity that naturally exists in my students.
This project would allow us to turn the STEM activities that we are already doing in our class into STEAM activities! Supporters would be allowing the "seemingly unconnected" subjects of science, social studies and reading to become connected with art.
