Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are simply wonderful! Between myself and the 2 other Elementary Interventionist we may see up to 125 students that struggle to read. Last year my group was made up of 41 English Language Learners, 2 students with IEPs (Individualized Education Program) goals and 1 student in the gifted and talented program.
More than three-quarters of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
In our building, 63% are of Hispanic descent and most are bilingual, 14% are African American, 22% are White Americans, and less than 1% are Asian. About 87% qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. One hundred percent of them are hard workers who believe in the growth mindset. They are very special students.
My Project
The materials I am requesting, for our Kinder through 5th grade students, will be used as reading incentives and prizes. Our focus is to conference with our students to set up 7 week goals and give children an incentive to preserver through challenging readings.
These incentives will successfully keep students motivated to achieve their weekly and monthly reading goals.
Along with offering a little motivations or rewards, we plan on having our students become a part of the process of creating a positive reading environment. The students will also earn an extra incentives that they will be expected to reward to a classmate that they believe is showing "GRIT". GRIT is defined as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals.
So in-turn they will not only be working towards be a better reader, receiving a small bookmark but also the opportunity to highlight a deserving classmate.
