Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with a group of incredibly talented and unique junior high students at a highly impacted Title 1 school. I am a special education teacher in a behavioral classroom. This means that I focus on teaching social skills including self-regulation strategies, relationship building, and growth mindset, to fourteen 7th - 9th grade students with disabilities.
My classroom is trauma informed, which means that I have been trained, and continue to train myself, on understanding how trauma affects the brain and how to meet the social emotional needs of my students.
My goal is to build a safe and welcoming classroom community for my students to learn. They come from diverse backgrounds and have had difficult pasts. They are learning how to be successful in a world that hasn't always been kind to them.
My Project
Junior high is an awkward time for all of us. Students are learning to be more independent, which means they are making important decisions.
Subscriptions to Scholastic Choices magazine will help me lead thoughtful conversations on important and sometimes difficult topics.
It's written with a junior high audience in mind. It gives information and raises questions about topics such as social media, friendships, teenage health, and understanding emotions. It includes articles written by others their age.
Each student will get 8 issues. I will also get a teacher guide, skills sheets, text sets, and videos that spark conversations and get students thinking.
