My Students

My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students in grades 6-8. Nearly all of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis

One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.

Many may not come from prosperous backgrounds, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library obtain books on various topics such as books in Spanish, graphic novels, books that deal with character development, financial literacy books, and ProjectLIT novels that promote diversity, as well as table cloths for our ProjectLIT book club lunch meetings.

My Project

Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to aloud everyday than are children in families with incomes at or above the poverty line. The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. The problem that we face in my area is that studies have shown that a majority of low-income households have no books in their home for children to get access to and many do not have means to get to the public library. Many of their families also do not have a vast knowledge of how to manage their finances because they were not taught financial literacy while growing up.

Thankfully, as a school librarian, I know that it just takes one book for them to fall in love with and they will be a reader for life.

This is why this project will provide my students with a variety of new books to spark their attention. This will allow the library to provide books for my graphic novel lovers who are my visual readers, diverse books so my students will see themselves in what they read, and financial literacy books for them to learn how to manage their finances as they get older to hopefully help them break that cycle of poverty. It will also provide us with table cloths for our book club lunch meetings.

Unfortunately, statistics have shown that a vast majority of students who start out behind, stay behind, and many of those drop-out. I don't want my students to be part of that large statistic. It just takes one book to change a child's life. Help me make that change in my students' lives.
